To align with our country’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by the year 2060, as an international city of China, Hong Kong has consistently engaged in global efforts to combat climate change, with a dedicated aim to attain carbon neutrality by 2050. Hydrogen energy emerges as a promising low-carbon resource. In June 2024, the HKSAR government unveiled the "Strategy of Hydrogen Development in Hong Kong," which outlines four principal strategies: improving legislation, establishing standards, aligning with the market, and advancing with prudence. These strategies aim to create an environment conducive to the development of hydrogen energy in Hong Kong in a prudent and orderly manner, enabling Hong Kong to capitalise on the environmental and economic opportunities brought about by recent developments in hydrogen energy, particularly within the country.
The Vocational Training Council (VTC) has consistently been a steadfast supporter of the government's relevant policies and participated in the International Hydrogen Development Forum 2025, hosted by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) and co-organised by the China Hydrogen Alliance. The forum was held at the Hong Kong Science Park on the 13th and 14th of March. This prestigious event attracted over 800 representatives from local, Mainland China, and international government bodies, public institutions, professional organisations, and academia.
At the forum, the Engineering Discipline of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE Engineering), members of the VTC, shared a forward-looking vision for the development of hydrogen energy, particularly in the context of providing professional training for practitioners in this emerging sector. Additionally, the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) presented the latest technological advancements, engineering solutions, and future trends within the hydrogen sector.
