The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is an agency of United Nations specialized in international maritime activities. Its main tasks are to develop and maintain a comprehensive regulatory framework for shipping in relation to safety, environmental concerns, legal matters, technical cooperation, maritime security and the efficiency of shipping.
Mr Koji Seikmizu, Secretary-General, has been heading the IMO since 2011. As the VIP of HKSAR, he visited the Maritime Services Training Institute on 5 March 2014. Joining the maritime industry in 1977, Mr. Seikmizu has ample experience in maritime safety and security; and lowering the carbon emission of different ships and vessels.
Mr. Seikmizu said, “Hong Kong is really a maritime nation. We hope to groom new talents with a global view of seafaring, including possible networking with the World Maritime University in Sweden.” He added, “A holistic view on how best to merge the training applied to international seagoing sector with domestic local craft sector is worth taken. The interchange of activities offered to prospective employees may be an added attraction.”
