VAR project team of the Engineering Discipline received honour at the ‘Hong Kong ICT Awards 2020’
Dec 2020

The VAR project team of the Engineering Discipline received honour at the ‘Hong Kong ICT Awards 2020’ underSmart Business Award’ category.

The Hong Kong ICT Awards: Smart Business Award recognises outstanding locally developed products and applications which provide cost-effective and innovative IT solutions to business enterprises as well as public sector organisations through the deployment of proven and emerging technologies.  Our team won the Certificate of Merit in ‘Smart Business (Solution for Business and Public Sector Enterprise) stream’ with their project ‘Virtual Reality Lift Maintenance Simulator (VRLMS)’ -  an industry-academia collaboration among Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD), Lift & Escalator Contractors Association (LECA) and Engineering Discipline of VTC.  The project aims to leverage virtual reality (VR) technology to advance training for talents in lift industry who are the heroes behind the scene in ensuring safety of about 68,000 lifts in Hong Kong.

The development of the project is never an easy task, as the lift maintenance work is complicated and the VR simulated training has to comply with regulatory requirements. After thorough consideration and discussion, representatives of LECA, EMSD and Pro-Act (Electrical – Lift & Escalator Stream) finally decided 10 critical training scenarios on key safety issues in lift maintenance.  The simulator developed by our VAR project team can greatly enhance the training experience of the practitioners by making lift training more interactive and stimulating in a completely safe environment.
