The VAR project team of the Engineering Discipline received honour at the 2020 Hong Kong ICT Awards under "Smart Business Award" category.
The Smart Business Award recognises outstanding locally developed products and applications that provide cost-effective and innovative IT solutions to business enterprises and public sector organisations through the deployment of proven and emerging technologies. Our team won the Certificate of Merit in the Smart Business (Solution for Business and Public Sector Enterprise) stream with their project, “Virtual Reality Lift Maintenance Simulator (VRLMS)”, an industry–academia collaboration between the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD), the Lift & Escalator Contractors Association (LECA) and the Engineering Discipline. The project aims to use virtual reality (VR) technology to advance training for talents in the lift industry, the heroes who work behind the scenes to ensure the safety of about 68,000 lifts in Hong Kong.
The development of the project is never an easy task, as the lift maintenance work is complicated and the VR simulated training has to comply with regulatory requirements. After thorough consideration and discussion, representatives of LECA, EMSD and Pro-Act (Electrical – Lift & Escalator Stream) finally decided 10 critical training scenarios on key safety issues in lift maintenance. The simulator developed by our VAR project team can greatly enhance the training experience of the practitioners by making lift training more interactive and stimulating in a completely safe environment.
