Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) Higher Diploma in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics graduates FAN Ho Wai and CHENG Kup Lung teamed up to claim the Gold Medal with an outstanding performance in the Autonomous Mobile Robotics team competition.
FAN Ho Wai’s passion for mechanics began in early childhood. He still vividly remembers the moment in kindergarten when he first played with a remote-controlled car in the park. Curiosity quickly took over as he wondered how all the parts worked together, and the sheer joy of that discovery ignited a lifelong love for mechanical engineering. Throughout secondary school and his time at IVE, Ho Wai competed in numerous local and international robotics events, building extensive hands-on experience. After graduating, he progressed to a local university to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Today, he remains actively involved in promoting STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education, enthusiastically sharing his knowledge with the next generation.
In the gold-medal-winning project, Ho Wai handled the robot’s mechanical design and hardware assembly, while CHENG Kup Lung took charge of programming and software development. Kup Lung described the coding process as a series of exciting challenges that demanded flexibility and a genuine enjoyment of problem-solving. For instance, unpredictable lighting conditions at the competition venue could interfere with the robot’s sensors, so he prepared multiple contingency algorithms to ensure reliable performance under any circumstances.
Kup Lung is now training full-time for the WorldSkills Competition Shanghai 2026, specialising in robot systems integration and performance optimisation. His programming journey began in secondary school: after joining a technology development contest in Form Two and completing a major project in Form Three, he set his sights on mastering both robotics and artificial intelligence. Those early experiences built a rock-solid technical foundation and fuelled his ongoing drive for innovation and excellence.
Both champions credit the two-year IVE Higher Diploma programme with sharpening their problem-solving abilities. The curriculum’s strong emphasis on project-based learning alongside theoretical study helped them develop independent learning skills, boost their confidence, and master practical techniques—laying an invaluable foundation for future competitions and further academic pursuits.
